Melbourne

The home of the first espresso machine in 1929. The home of Grinders Coffee since 1962.

_____

Giancarlo Giusti and Rino Benassi’s story is both extraordinary and ordinary.

The ordinary toil of post war migrants.

The extraordinary dream that built a premier coffee brand that is still going strong.

One pound purchased the first grinder, and money borrowed from a friend paid for the first roaster. Coffee roasted, ground, and sold all from the store at 277 Lygon St.

By 1969, Giancarlo was supplying cafes throughout Melbourne, his famous continental style coffee in demand.

Customers poured into Lygon St, seeking out the welcoming shop with the delicious Italian coffee. Giancarlo’s passion and persistence is a foundation stone of Melbourne’s now world famous coffee culture.

From humble beginnings and a single store front, Grinders has grown into a trusted quality producer supplying cafes and restaurants across Australia, and now providing the same premium coffee for an increasingly sophisticated domestic market.

In addition to our coffee blends, Grinders distributes and retails award winning coffee equipment, provides technical support, regular servicing, and training in many aspects of coffee making to deliver the perfect combination of skill and tradition in every cup.

As the coffee market evolves, so do we with our state-of-the-art roasting facilities in Fairfield and our flagship retail outlets in Woolloangabba, and, on our original site at 277 Lygon St, where we still roast and serve coffee in service of Giancarlo’s and Rino’s original dream. A dream that came from The Streets of Melbourne.
